- Immigrants "con calma todo llega"

Spain has become one of the main immigrant destinations in Europe due to its increasing demand for foreign workers and its gradually mature immigration management. A large proportion of immigrants in Spain are from South American countries as they share the same language and a similar culture.

However, it takes more than patience for them to obtain legal residence or to settle. Due to the lack of working permits, they tend to be forced to work under harsh working conditions with low salaries, few protections, and unstable income.

The main goal of this project is to document the experience of South American immigrants in Spain so as to understand their life conditions of veracity.

They stood outside a big market for construction materials waiting for mostly one-day working opportunities.

“We are here waiting for something to do. Maybe someone needs a painter for their house, and then we will go with them."

Most of them are from South American countries, and their status is the main reason that limits them to temporary jobs as a mean of subsistence.

Arrived in 2005 with his mother and sisters. Has been in Spain for 19 years. When asked the changes of Spain in his eyes, he said that he feels the culture is becoming more open with more immigrants from different countries to Spain. He enjoys festivals of all kinds and beach here, and also made several local friends. Nowadays he has his apartment and a stable job in a local telecommunication company. 22 April, 2024.
